MITCHELL Hill City New Era --- Thursday, September 17, 1908
Andrew Taber MITCHELL was born in Graysville, Ohio, November 5th, 1842, died at his home in Morland, Kansas, September 5, 1908. While yet a boy he moved wiht his parents to Elkhart, Indiana. While there, probably at the age of 14, he was converted and joined the M. E. church. When President Lincoln made a call for volunteers he was one of the frist to offer his services and spent three and one half years of his life in the Union Army. During the war he was wounded at the battle of Stony Point and lay for three days without attendance or even a drink. Such sufferings as this are not easy to understand in these days but no doubt has in part hastened the death of this soldier boy. After leaving the hospital he came home and was greeted by the terrible news that his mother was buried in the cemetery and he was motherless.
On September 5th, 1867 at Osceola, Indiana, he was united in marriage with Miss Josephine E. MOORE. To this union was born six children, Mrs. Florence WILSON of Great Bend, M. E. MITCHELL of Morland, Kansas, J. C. MITCHELL, M.D., of Waldo, Kansas, Mrs. Helen BRIDAHL of Oakley, Kansas, Frank MITCHELL of Morland, Kansas and little Eldora Etta whose body lies in the cemetery at Morland, Kansas.
About 30 years ago he began to preach in the M. E. Church and has held several important charges in this district and others. He was ordained by Bishop S. M. MERRILL at Norton, November 29, 1883. He has preached only occasionally for several years his health being poor. He was Post Master at Morland for the past two years and on account of failing health resigned and retired from the office about the first of July this year....
