Hainen, wife of Agent John P. Hainen at the C. R. I. & P. Ry. passed away at 7 o'clock Monday evening. Her death was not a surprise to the community. For while a struggle had been made for life many were led to fear that the odds of disease were against all the efforts of the family. A short trip to Colorado last summer without benefit was followed by a more extended trip into Arizona from October to Christmas. At first the temporary benefit gave hope only to be followed by the advent of death to end the struggle. Mrs. Hainen was 32 years old and had been married to Mr. Hainen twelve years. During their stay in Mankato of some three years the list of friends has lengthened to include the entire community. Mrs. Hainen was associated with her husband in the office work of the station, acting most of the time as telegraph operator. A sister was present with her during her last hours but her father and mother did not arrive until the evening after her death. The funeral takes place today at 10 o'clock from the Methodist Church. The sympathy of all goes out to Mr. Hainen and his son Virgil in the time of sore affliction. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The Western Advocate Mankato, Kansas, Friday, January 6, 1899 Mrs. Olive E. Hainen, who died January 2, 1899 at 7:10 p.m. was 31 years old November 28, 1898. Mrs. Hainen was born in Champaign county, Ill., came to Kansas with her parents about fourteen years ago, and resided on a farm near Ft. Scott, Kansas. She was married to John P. Hainen, Dec. 16, 1886. She leaves a loving, devoted husband, one son, other relatives, and a large circle of friends to mourn her loss. She was a devoted Christian, being a member of the M. E. Church at the time of her death. Mrs. Hainen, with her husband and son, has resided in several towns in Kansas, being telegraph operator on the Rock Island Ry for the last six years where Mr. Hainen was station agent. She spent a short time in Colorado and Oklahoma last summer, hoping to benefit her health. In November Mr. Hainen accompanied her to Arizona and New Mexico, where they spent about five weeks, but instead of improving, she failed rapidly. She passed away just a week from the time she arrived home. Everything was done to benefit her health, but t'was all in vain. Mrs. Hainen's mother, father, and sister, Mr. Hainen's mother and father and Mrs. Hart, from Topeka, were present at the funeral. The sorrowing husband and son have the sympathy of the entire community. The funeral services were held from the M. E. Church, Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. and the remains were laid to rest in the Mankato cemetery. Resolutions WHEREAS death has removed from our midst our beloved sister, Olive E. Hainen, be it RESOLVED: ĘThat we, the members of the D. of H. No. 148 A. O. U. W. extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family in their sad affliction. Our fraternal dead we cannot forget. Nor shall the grave eternal sever. For they shall live in memory yet, And there shall live forever. RESOLVED: That those resolutions be spread upon the minutes of our lodge, and that a copy be sent to the family, and also be published in the city papers. Mrs. E. A. Littleton Mrs. M. E.
