Thomas Hinchey, a locomotive fireman on our Lincoln branch of the Union Pacific railraod, carries a Winchester rifle, in the cab of his engine, and it is not an uncommon thing for him to shoot a jack rabbit or a prairie chicken from the moving train. He sometimes shoots a rabbit, while both the train and the rabbit are running, but one day last week he made the most remarkable shot that we ever heard of, and we have heard some whoppers by sportsmen, too. While running up the Saline Valley, between Salina and this place, some wild geese that had been feeding on a wheat field some three or four hundred yards from the track flew up and were making off when Mr. Hinchey took up his rifle, aimed at one of them and brought it down. Passengers on the train thought that someone secreted in the field had done the shooting, til the train stopped to let the marksman get his game. On examination it was found that the ball had passed through the neck of the goose, which was a fine specimen of his kind. If game of any kind is wise, it will not get within rifle shot of Mr. Hinchey’s train, as he shoots to kill.
