J. and Maria SUDERMANN who died from diphtheria at Lehigh. Deaths occurred one each week for a month in possibly 1882 or 1883. J. J. SUDERMANN had a business in Lehigh. In April 2001 my husband and I were in Lehigh and checked cemeteries in the area that we could find. Are there any on farmsites in the area? My Great-Grandmother, Susanna MILLER, came to live with the SUDERMANN family in August 1883. The children died before this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We know that J. J. & Maria SUDERMANN had a son, John who survived the diphtheria. The family had 5 more children in following years: Anna, Tiene, Henry, Lena & Aaron. We believe we have pictures of some of these siblings, but the pictures are unidentified. Charles was the youngest, born 17 October 1889. Peter married second wife, Katherine Elizabeth HEINZE on 11 April 1894. To this union were born nine children. It is thought that Peter SCHNEIDER always lived in the Durham, Kansas vicinity, and that Barbara was buried in Marion County. However, her burial site has not been located. His wife is Sarah BLYTHE. He came to Marion County in late 1871. He was ill from illnesses that he developed while serving the Union Army. His lungs and kidneys were affected. His name was Gottfried HAFFNER. He was born in Tscherbakovka, Russia, a German from Russia. They came to the USA on the USS City of Richmond. Then went on to Marion County, Kansas settling in the Lehigh, Kansas area. His sons; 2 of ten children were, Elder Gottfried HAFFNER and John Frederick HAFFNER. John Frederick was my Great-Grandfather. We have been unable to obtain the death certificate for Gottfried HAFFNER, there was a fire that destroyed the records shortly after his death in Omega, Oklahoma. If we can locate a sibling of Gottfried's maybe we can order their death certificate if their death was in the USA and we knew the place and date of death.
