Query Surnames: Squirrel, Hon-Ne-Quah

Date: 4 January 1998

Query:I am seekin information about a Shawnee family. My family could be buried under Hon-Ne-Quah, this is Shawnee for Squirrel. It is spelled phonitically because there is no correct way to spell in Shawnee. My Uncle spells it Huniqua

Keely ovation@midusa.net

Response: There are no records for Squirrel or Hon-Ne-Quah in the three volumes of cemetery records. It appears that most of the records for Miami County related to the Miami, Wea, Peoria and Plyankicha tribes. Even these records are fairly sparce because the tribes apparently began to relocate to Pottawatomie Co, KS, in the late 1840's or early 1850's, although there are records for baptisms up till about 1861. Kinsella's book History of the Cradleland pp 237-244 lists baptisms, marriages, deaths but mostly 1846-1848.
