Query Surnames: Kilgore

Date: 16 Mar 2001

Query: My Kilgore family lived in Miami County many years. Mathias Kilgore arrived there in 1865 and bought land. He had five children who were between 6 and 15 when they moved there from Fulton and Cumberland Counties in Illinois. Cenia Kilgore born 1849 in Ohio married Horace Bell, Sarah b 1851 in Ohio married George W. Finch, John Henry born 1853 married Amanda Shelton, James born 1855, Susannah b 1859 married Frank Crow. I have found all of these children except for James. I found some land records in county where his sister sold him land, but I have not found anything on his life or death after that time. My cousin told me that he supposedly was a self-styled evangelist, but I do not know if that was true. Any help would be appreciated. John Henry died in 1914 in Miami County, but his brother wasn't listed as a survivor, so I assume he had already died.

Query Surnames: Feighner

Date: 9 Mar 2001

Query: I am looking for more information about the Feighner family found on page 163. In the online index it mentioned Lena, Gladys, and Walter.

Matthew aamotml@hotmail.com

Response: From Family Histories and Stories of Miami County, Kansas, Volume I, page 163, the following story about the Lena Feighner family written by Lena Feighner:

"Lena Feighner was born December 3, 1895, at Pony Corner, Fontana, Kansas, and lived in a prairie cabin with her parents and brother Walter, and sister, Gladys. Her Grandfather Feighner was a missionary pastor to a congregation that met in the new schoolhouse. Her mother's French Huguenot ancestry gave her a love for music; her father taught Lena about animals and Aunt Rose taught her the names and habitat of flowers.

After high school, Lena took botany at Kansas University at Lawrence, but her great enjoyment came from the summer trip classes in animal ecology under Dr. Victor E. Shellford of the University of Illinois. Dr. Shellford took classes over 28,000 miles in North America, from Maine and Canada to Mexico. Lena joined all of them going somewhere to study each summer.

Lena now owns 160 acres of woodland prairie where her grandfather served. She calls it the Shellford Wild Life Sanctuary and gave it to the Burroughs Audobon Association of greater Kansas City for a nature preserve for wild birds, especially bobwhites.

She taught general science for many years at the Central Junior High at Kansas City. She made her science and biology classes so interesting, that both she and her pupils enjoyed them. One student later told her she had saved his life by teaching what the natives ate in the jungles, so he survived while hiding from the Japanese.

Although her home was robbed and burned in 1980, her former students presented her with a trailer and money to help pay her medical bills following a robbery and beating six months later.

She loves nature, music, art, china dolls, students, church work and traveling. She urges science teachers to use their own ideas when teaching"
