Query Surnames: Devlin

Date: 28 December 2002

Query: Could you please check Family Histories and Stories of Miami County, Kansas [Vol I] for a biography of Pat Devlin on page 30.

Greg Peterman greg@gate.net

Response: From Family Histories and Stories of Miami Co, KS, Vol 1, p. 30, Oswatomie History: "Osawatomie has the honor that the name "Jayhawker" originated here. Before the sun was up, one morning in the fall of 1856, a free-stater, named Pat Devlin, was seen riding into town on a well-loaded mule. A neighbor remarked, "Pat you looklike you had been on an excursion." Pat answered that he had been "jayhawking." Asked for an explanation, Pat said he had been foraging off the enemy; that in Ireland, a bird called the jayhawk worried its prey before devouring it. From this incident, we have the now familiar nome of Jayhawker.
