Query Surnames: Ballard

Date: 26 June 2003

Query: I would like information on the Ballard family that lived in Osage Twp in about 1872.

My Grandfather, Andrew Brown applied for a marriage license under the name of Andy Brown & Angeline Ballard in 1872 in Miami Co. KS.(I have a copy) The County Clerk did not complete the application because evidentley they did not bring a witness to verify they met the requirements to marry.

Andrew was already married to Sarah E. (?) and the 1867 KS census showed them living together but did not show their daughter who contacted his family in 1924 after his death. By 1870 US census they had separated and he was living with his brother in Osage Twp

1872 after the failed marriage application Andy moved to Rooks Co. KS and filed for a homestead arriving that same year. I presume Andy & Angeline were married along the way or after they arrived in Rooks Co.

Thank you for any help you can give me on this Ballard family.

Query Surnames: Nichols

Date: 3 June 2003

Query: I am doing research on my family and my Great-Grandfather was Charles J. Nichols. I see on the Miami County's web pages that a Robert A. Nichols had some inquiries back in 1995. I tried writing to him at the address shown and the letter was returned. Other Internet research shows him at the age of 75 so he may have passed on.

MICOGERSOQU Vol. 10, No. 2, p-14: Nichols: Jesse, Ruth Hanna, Mary Evelyn, Lloyd, William Jesse, Charles Joseph; MICOGERSOQU Vol. 10, No. 4, p-21: Nichols: Jesse L.; MICOGERSOQU Vol. 11, No. 1, p-23: Nichols: Charles, Lloyd, Powell: Ruth; MICOGERSOQU Vol. 12, No. 2, p-24: Nichols: Loud (Sunday), Charles, Powell: Ruth H.

I have very little on my Nichols side of the house because my Grandfather died when my dad was only four. Charles, my G-Grandfather, moved to Stigler, Haskell County, Ok in 1910 and my father never mentioned him, so I assume there was little contact between them.

My dad's name was William Lloyd Nichols; his father was William Lewis Nichols, and his father was Charles J. Nichols. Other than death dates and where they died, I little or no information.

Michael F. Nichols rmcmsw@bellsouth.net

Response: MICOGERSOQU Vol. 10, No. 2, p-14: "Robert A. Nichols, R 1, Box 99, McPherson, Ks 67460 wants to verify information he has on his great grandparents, Jesse and Ruth Hanna Nichols. They had a land grant of 160 acres Twp 17, Sec 22, R 24 in Miami County. Their children were mary evelyn, Lloyd, William Jesse and Charles Joseph. He would appreciate any information."

Query Surnames: Godfroy

Date: 1 June 2003

Query: Family Histories and Stories of Miami Co., KS, Vol. 1. I am trying to find out what the information is for Godfroy, Jocco 142

Brenda Lindley LtLBearWmn@aol.com

Response: From Family Histories and Stories of Miami Co, KS, Vol 1, p 142: story about Noel or Christmas Dagenette The Last Chief of the Wea Indians written by Kenneth Dagenett.

First paragraph reads as follows: "Wis-rn-Cah or Christmas (Noel) Dagenett was born December 25, 1799 in the Indian village of Wea Town, later called Dagenett Villiage, now Terre Haute, Indiana. He was named Noel in honor of his father's religion. He was a son of Ambrose Dagenett, a French trader, and his wife, an Indian princess, Me-chin-qua-ho-sha (Beautiful Shade Tree), who was a sister of Jocco Godfroy or Tac-ke-ke-kan (the Tall Oak) who was chief of the Wea Indian tribe."

Sean Furniss

Follow-up Comments from Brenda Lindley: "1. The Village where Christmas was born was called We-au-te-no and meant the Rising Sun. The village was named by Principal Chief Jacco Godfroy and it was his village. It was never called "Dagenette Village." It was sometimes referred to as Jacco's Towne by the whites. 2. We didn't have "Princesses" that was a white mans term. 3. Christmas was never named a "chief" by his People. Nor is there any documentation, Treaties or otherwise, where he signed as a chief of any type."
