Query Surnames: Sutherland

Date: 17 January 2005

Query: I am trying to pull together family information on my maternal grandparents: Clyde P. Sutherland (365+p,366) and Jenette Russell (365) Sutherland.

They came to Paloa from Garnett Kansas. My grandpa started a grocery store on the town square in Paola which was later moved to a new building on the old 69 Hwy to be the first super market in Paola just past the railroad overpass on the old highway into town. Later, my Uncle Rex Sutherland took over the business and developed a strip mall outside of town along with his new Sutherland's Super Market.

My mother was Louise Nadine Sutherland who left Garnett after graduating from high school and married my dad R.H. Chizek in Kansas City in the early 1940's. Later, we lived in Paola while my father was in the Navy during WW II. My grandparents owned a home about one block North of the park entrace where the Mimi County Fair was always held. My grandfather's store use to sponsor and get uniforms for the summer baseball teams that played in the park. As a little kid, I use to swim at that old pool in the park which is now gone.

As a small child, I remember the old store on the square. My grandfather owned it, my aunt and my mother were cashiers, and my uncle Rex Sutherland was the butcher. The Walter's owned the drug store with a soda fountain and the Keith's owned a clothing store about two stores west of my Grandpa's grocery store in town. After my father got out of the Navy, we lived in Paola for about 1 1/2 years before moving to Kansas City. I had many ice creame cones and drank many coca colas at Walter's Drug Store on the corner where a bank now stands. And...I got my first pair of cowboy boots when I was four years old at Keith's clothing store.
