| Montgomery County is located in Southeastern
Kansas, on the southern Kansas border, the third county west of the eastern
border with Missouri. Montgomery County was created out of Wilson County
in 1867. The County Seat, Independence
is near the center of the county. Coffeyville
is the largest city and is located about 15 miles to the southeast of Independence.
Some other cities in Montgomery county are Caney,
Cherryvale, Liberty,
Havana, Tyro, Dearing and Elk City. Clicking on the underlined city names

William Inge, Pulitzer Prize-winning
playwright, was born and grew up in Independence. Each year, Independence
Community College hosts a four-day
William Inge festival and conference honoring the man and his works,
including the play, "Picnic" and the Academy Award winning movie, "Splendour
in the Grass". The William Inge collection, housed at the college, is the
most extensive collection in existence.

Just south of Independence, "Little
House on the Prairie" is an authentically recreated log cabin on the site
where Laura Ingals Wilder's family lived for a time. Her family history

CANEY
VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM:
Located at the west end of Fouth Avenue in Caney, Ks. The town's heritage
as "The Big Gas Town" is reflected in a large wall mural recently completed
by an area artist. Two large rooms are filled with items from the town's
past. Across the street is the orginal Little White Schoolhouse containing
school memorabilia; and back of it is the original doctor's office building
which will be used for displaying items in the near future.
