McCLAIN My maternal grandfather, Frank(lin)? N. McCLAIN was b. "somewhere in NE.", Feb. 26, 1891. His first marriage was to Tessie BERRY on August 21, 1915 in Ellsworth, Ellsworth Co, KS. Frank divorced Tessie in Independence, Montgomery Co, KS on Feb. 23, 1918 and married Lillian Gladys BRETCHES on March 12, 1918 in Claremore, Rogers Co, OK. Frank appears on the 1915 KS State Census living in Sycamore Twp, Montgomery Co, KS with a family by the name of STEVENSON as a Farmer, b. in NE, from OK to KS. On July 19, 1919 Frank McCLAIN was shot to death by his father-in-law and brother-in-law. One known child born to Frank and Lillian, my mother was 10 months old at the time of his death. Frank was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, KS. A murder trial resulted from the death of Frank and was held in Independence, Montgomery Co, KS. Frank's family were not notified of his death. Family members did not talk of Frank to my mother and we have no idea of WHO HIS PARENTS WERE. In my searching for the past 10 years to learn the identity of my grandfather's parents and any other possible descendants I have checked the following records with out success : Probate Records, Death Certificate for Frank, News Paper Accounts of his death, Trial Transcripts, Marriage and Divorce Records, and I placed a public appeal in The Independence Daily Reporter for information. I just obtained the information regarding the name of Frank's first wife, Tessie BERRY. I'm in hopes that someone is researching this line and another avenue will be opened to me ? PLEASE, the smallest amount of information will be appreciated. Jeannie Josephson 9/97

MYERS I am also searching for information about the James William MYERS family. James MYERS brought his family from Illinois to the Coffeyville area sometime before the 1880 census. His second wife was Mary Catherine COONS who had brothers, Marion and John, and a sister, Ellen, who married a RIGGS. James had a son, James William, and a daughter, Eliza J., from a previous marriage. Eliza J. is suppose to have married a HUNSAKER. James and Mary Catherine's children were Zilla May, who was listed above as married to Jacob ROBERTS, and John T. There was also a half-brother to Zilla named Ed, but I have not figured out how he fits into this family. James and Mary were still in Coffeyville in 1894 when Zilla married Jacob ROBERTS, but I am not sure what happens to the family after that as my dad, who is Jacob and Zilla's grandson, does not know any MYERS relatives. He does remember an Uncle Will MYERS, who I think may be the younger James William, who made cuckleburr tea while on a visit from California in probably the early to mid 1940s. Zilla married an unknown FULTON after Jacob's death. My dad believes Mr. FULTON died sometime before my dad was born in 1935. Zilla is the only MYERS that I have located a grave for at this time.Thank you. ROWLEY My wife stems from a Rowley line that traces from New York state(we think in Steuben County)to Kansas in about 1870 at which time her g-grandfather, a Nathan A. Rowley, relocated to Butler County, KS near Augusta and bought some land and began farming. We are trying to determine the names of his parents and where they spent their lives.(We think they were born, raised and lived in New York state their entire lives). We know from family lore that this Nathan ROWLEY had some connections in the Montgomery County area and that it is likely that he lived there prior to locating near Augusta. It is also likely but unconfirmed that he had connections in the Oklahoma Indian Territory. Are you aware of any resources that could help us in finding the antecedents of this Nathan Rowley? Are you aware of any family history info on Rowleys in the Montgomery County area? Or in the adjacent area of Oklahoma that used to be Indian territory? We know of a Henry Clay Rowley and an Albert J. Rowley that had roots in Montgomery County and we suspect that our Nathan A. Rowley was related to these men. Perhaps they were cousins. Help us if you can. Lee Kraft, Salem, OR.(former Kansans) 5/97 ROYER - see DEETZ
