I am also looking for the burial grounds for Ichabod AKINS. I understand he was buried in Neosho County, but have no idea what cemetery. He died on February 26, 1902, according to my findings. They lived first in Miami County, then Neosho County. Their sons, William H. and Charles C. STEWART moved to Anderson County, settling in Garnett. John W. STEWART was a Methodist clergyman. His first wife, Sarah (ADAMS) STEWART likely died in Erie Township, Neosho County between 1870 and 1876. He then married Martha (CLEVER?) in 1876. John W. and Sarah STEWART's daughter, Sarah A. married William H. NICHOLAS. Son, William H. married Eunice OSBORN, son Charles C. STEWART married Rebecca Jane unknown. Some of the next generation married into the GRAY, DOTTS, ANDREWS and other families. Died, location unknown, 2 July 1915. 1880 census in Osage Mission, Neosho County, Kansas. Occupation listed as Agent for Patteny? Family story says Edward "went out west when the west was young" and taught school. The family was Catholic. Brother Jacob S. KUHNS living in household in 1880 census. Born 21 September 1842 in Pennsylvania, family story says he later moved to Florida. HAGER/HAGAR, b: 1835 in Kentucky, married to Mary Helen BELL. James dies in Neosho County on 20 December 1880. I believe him to be buried in the St. Francis Cemetery. I am looking for his father, I believe him to be James HAGER. (Elizabeth HAGER/HAGAR, daughter of James H. HAGAR, Monica FENWICK. I located him, James W. In her later years, she seems to have lived with her daughter, Mary Ruth SHERMAN in the Phoenix area, but thought the local paper might have had an obituary for her. ----------------------------- ROBERTS Sandra Roberts Jenkins (sandyjean627@aol.com) 26 March 2005 My Great-Great-Grandfather, Wiley ROBERTS came to the Osage Mission area with his daughter's family (Caroline (ROBERTS) WATKINS) as an elderly man in the 1870s. He died there December 26, 1878 at 88 years old, and it is remembered that he was buried near an old Indian trading post. Is there such a location and is there a cemetery there? Obituary? USHER, son of Nathaniel Ransom USHER and Dorothy ATWOOD, is my 2nd Great-Grandfather. My records indicate he died on 27 January 1898 in Chanute, Neosho County, Kansas. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, along with several of his 14 children. I would be happy to exchange USHER information with anyone researching this family. Also, am planning a trip to Kansas in early April to try and find gravesites of the USHER family but have been unable to locate Elmwood Cemetery. ----------------------------- AXCELL Mary Lou Axcell Finch (marylou@thefinches.com) 13 March 2005 My Grandparents, Erick and Hattie AXCELL raised their family in Chanute. My father, Walter AXCELL was born 14 September 1900 in Chanute. I have his high school diploma and also his sister, Edith's which I would love to donate to the historical society. I also have a bedspread with pillow shams which was knitted out of string by a Russian lady in Chanute to pay her grocery bill at a grocery store my Grandfather owned or managed. I pray someone can help me with this. As Layton's daughter, Sarah Jane (Sadie) SHARP was my Grandmother. He was born January 30, 1824 in Indiana and married Nancy BLAIR on September 25, 1843. Peter and Nancy were listed on the 1870 census records for Walnut Grove Township in Neosho County. In 1880, Nancy is shown to live with her son, James in Walnut, Crawford County. Can anyone verify that for me? ----------------------------- MUDD William Bromley (wvbromley@yahoo.com) 1 March 2005 My Great-Grandfather, Lloyd Napolean MUDD was born in either Neosho or Crawford County, real close to the county line (Neosho, Walnut Grove, and Walnut were all mentioned). I am trying to find the actual location they lived in the periods from 1869-1900(?). His father was Austin A. MUDD, whose father was John D. MUDD. Excerpt from Cutler's history: "The Catholic Church was first organized in Neosho County in 1869, and was effected in the farm residence of John MUDD, by one of the fathers from Osage Mission." I am trying to locate as much as possible. ----------------------------- MAYES Jerry Snow (jerrysnowok@aol.com) 20 February 2005 My Great-Grandfather, Ebenezer Chadwick MAYES moved from Terre Haute, Indiana to Galesburg, Neosho County, Kansas in 1884, then was living in Erie in 1889. Source - his Civil War pension application. He was a farmer and a cabinet maker. The family was living in the Oklahoma Territory in 1892. He and wife Mary Agnes (GULICK) MAYES arrived in Kansas with at least 3 children - Gertrude, Maude (my grandmother) and Pearl. Golda and Henry had five boys. They lived in Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. I would like to share information with any living family member, but specifically I am looking for an obituary and resting place for Golda and her sons. John Henry CHRISMAN was my Grandfather's brother, Golda was his first wife, they divorced. ----------------------------- RYAN...EWING...MILLER David Ewing (davidewing93@msn.com) 1 February 2005 My Great-Great-Grandparents were William MILLER (1832-1913) and Elizabeth (BOOKER) (EWING) MILLER (1832-1913), who moved from Indiana to Big Creek Township in Neosho County just after the Civil War and later lived and died in Chanute. I believe perhaps some of Elizabeth's EWING relatives also came, her father was Robert W. EWING (1808-1877), her mother, Temperance W. COOK (1808-1851) died in Iowa before the Civil War, so did not come to Kansas. Elizabeth also had a brother, Francis M. EWING (b: 1836) who I believe lived there for a time, but ended up going back to Indiana.
