Organized in 1872, named in memory of Alva P. Russell, Captain Company K, 2nd Kansas Cavalry, who died December 12, 1862, in a field hospital near Prairie Grove, Arkansas, of wounds received in battle December 6, 1862, at Prairie Grove.
