FATAL CRASH – Deputy Sheriff E. B. Salyer, left, guards the body of one of the victims of the fatal highway crash which occurred Monday afternoon, when a Sedgwick County Highway department truck went out-of-control and overturned at Broadway and Sixty-ninth, when its driver swerved the vehicle to avoid a collision with another vehicle, Ellis S. Brown, 66, of Derby, Kas., and Ira J. Mitchell, 65, of the Eaton Hotel, were instantly killed when they were pinned beneath the truck bed.

Two County Workers Die

Two men were killed and three others injured, Monday, when a Sedgwick County highway department truck in which they were riding, went out of control and overturned at Broadway and Sixty-ninth Streets, north.

Crushed when they were pinned beneath the bed of the overturned truck were Ira J. Mitchell, 65, of the Eaton Hotel and Ellis E. Brown, 66, of Derby Kas. County Coroner Sam Smith said both men were killed instantly of fractured necks and crushed chests.

Seaf Burton, 63, of 1619 South Richmond, was admitted to St. Francis Hospital for treatment of possible fractured ribs and bruises. Also treated in the St. Francis emergency room were G. W.

Brown, 61, of 1326 south Walnut, and W. R. Fogle, 66, of 1239 South Osage, both of whom suffered bruises in the crash. All five men were employees of the county highway department and were en route to their homes. (cont. page 24, column 2 – not available)
