Charles Louis Rosenkrans Dies After a Long Illness
Last Thursday afternoon this community was made one of sadness by the announcement that Charles Rosenkrans one of the county's oldest and most highly respected citizens was dead.
For several months Mr. Rosenkrans has been in feeble health and for some time it has been known that the end was not far off and yet when the announcement came that he had answered the final summons it caused much of a shock among those who had known him from early manhood. No more honorable man, no better neighbor or citizen ever lived in Sheridan County than Charles Louis Rosenkrans, and the entire community mourns with the bereaved family his demise.
Charles Louis Rosenkrans was born in Jersey Shore, Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, April 12, 1853, at which place he resided until 13 years of age, he then moved to St. Joseph county, Michigan, and was there married to Miss Sarah Ann Wesby in the year 1875. The following year he moved to Decatur county, Kansas, making that his home until 1882, when he settled two miles south of Hoxie, where he died January 9, 1913, after a lingering illness.
Mr. Rosenkrans was the father of nine children, four of whom survive him as follows: Mrs. Wm. Kerr, Mrs. James Kerr, Mrs. Albert Mitchell and Harm Rosenkrans, all of Hoxie, who, with the wife, three sisters, and two brothers mourn the loss of a father, husband and brother.
Yes, Charley Rosenkrans is dead: A good man has gone to his reward and the community mourns. The funeral was conducted Saturday from Hoxie M.E. church by Rev. George Winters who paid a beautiful tribute to the departed when he quoted:
"Let me live in my house by the side of the road. Where the race of men go by --
The men that are good, the men that are bad, as good and as bad as I.
Then why should I sit in the scorner's seat, or hurl the cynic's ban.
Let me live in my house by the side of the road,
And be a friend to man."
