Fort Scott

Fort Scott is a unique community which was started in 1842 as a fort to protect the Indian Nations from the white citizens attempting to take their lands. It slowly became a community which was the center for the Free Citizens and Pro Slavery movement. We were part of the creation of the KS 1st Colored Infantry – the first in the U.S. OFGS has many records of the local churches, clubs and service organizations. Fort Scott is noted in City Directories, many locally written books, Goodlander Home records, and lots of businesses. Two of our favorite records are the Sanborn Maps which are wonderful records of our original buildings and the many notebooks and filing cabinets full of photographs. Come check us out, but give yourself time to see all we can show you.
