I have 300 glass plate negatives that I am having printed, at $5.00 each. These were taken by a Doctor Hendron of Bell County, Kentucky, when in 1898 he took a trip through the west photographing places and people. If you can name the places or people please let me know. The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress has been directed to establish a Veterans' Oral History Project. The Center will collect videotaped and audiotaped recollections of veterans from all of Ameriaca's wars to be made available to scholars, students, and family members. One of our activities has been finding old books that we don't want or need any more and holding a book sale. Also in order to share our recipes that have been handed down throughout past generations, we love bake sales, which our members add a bit of their talent and make crafts to sell at the community bazaar or Riverfest.
Our workshops have been fun: dealing with family histories, and various members would present programs on historical subjects.
In the 1980's, the City of Leavenworth had their annual Buffalo Bill Days which included a parade, and the Leavenworth County Genealogical Society would enter a float to generate interest for anyone who was interested in family history but did not know how to get started.
Fall picnics were held at the different members homes as a final outdoor activity, before Old Man Winter appeared.
Several seminars were held to help people interested in how to do their genealogy. They all discovered it's a wonderful hobby, time consuming and a way to spend your extra change in your pocket. Since the age of computers has arrived, many spend countless hours doing research on them.
Each December, the Leavenworth County Genealogical Society has a Christmas party at the Leavenworth County Historical Museum, which adds a lot of glow to the occasion with the beautiful atmosphere . . . taking you back in time with a ceiling high Christmas tree and old-fashioned decorations. Sandwiches, drinks, and many goodies for your sweet tooth are brought by members who are eager to share their special Christmas recipes that have been handed down to them through the years. The members talk about the past years' accomplishments and recall old-fashioned Christmases of the past that remain in their memory books, diaries and scrapbooks.
The Leavenworth County Genealogical Society took on a project of compiling and editing a book about Leavenworth County History. It was spearheaded by Mrs. Rita (Benge) Spindler and her committee. After a couple years of collecting stories from numerous contributors, it was sent to be published and in May 1990, it became a reality. It was a great undertaking and all copies sold quickly.
In recent years, garage sales have been an activity which brings out old and interesting items, with something for everyone.
The Leavenworth County Genealogists are proud of their organization and looking forward to more years of Fun, Action and Smiles!
