Topic: Levi R WARNER from West Virginia
From: Steve Stump ssstump@bellsouth.net
Date: Wednesday, November 29, 2000 07:33 PM

Trying a longshot here. I am searching for my gg grandfather, Levi R. WARNER. He was born in Virginia abt 1842, the son of Oran WARNER & Elizabeth Virginia Davis. From 1861-1865 he served in the 10th WV Volunteer Infantry, Company A, with three of his brothers.

He married Sarah A. MARPLE in Braxton Co WV, Oct 19, 1865. They had 2 children, Charles Elsworth & Clara. Sarah died shortly after Clara was born in 1869 and the children lived with relatives in Lewis Co, WV.

In 1870, Levi was living with his brother on a farm in Lewis Co. After the 1870 census no other records of him have been found. There are two family stories. One was that he went out west and was never heard from again. The other was that he worked as a carpenter in Kansas and regularly sent home money for the support of his children until his death about 1878.

If anyone is interested in this person or has any info to share, I would be happy to hear from you. I have his Civil War discharge medal and a wedding day photo.

Best Regards,
Steve

There's a Girard in Crawford County, supposedly named after Dr. C. H. Strong's hometown of Girard, PA. Girard's most famous citizen was E. Haldeman-Julius, publisher of the mass produced "Little Blue Books". Girard was also where Socialist Eugene V. Debs launched his presidential campaign in 1908. There was also a post office named Gerardy in Washington County from 1895-1903. [Kansas Post Offices by Robert W. Baughman]

It's NOT listed in the 1895 Atlas online at http://www.livgenmi.com/1895.htm or in "1001 Kansas Place Names" or in "Kansas Post Offices"

You can contact the KS State Historical Society - they have a set of about 30 books that have information about "Dead Kansas Towns"

Good luck, Ardie

Topic: William Myers, man on the run
From: Ann Causey macausey@worldnet.att.net
Date: Wednesday, November 01, 2000 11:29 AM

Searching for death date and place for great-uncle, William Edgar MYERS, born 1886 in Miss. Family tradition states he shot and killed a man in Silver Creek, MS then fled the State. His father was later told William had died of TB in a Catholic hospital in Kansas. This would probably have been in the 1920's. Was there any particular hospital in Kansas that cared for TB patients? Possibly a tuberculosis sanatorium?

From: Ardie Grimes agrimes@inetnebr.com
Date: Thursday, November 02, 2000 10:08 PM

The Kansas State Tuberculosis Sanatorium four miles east of Norton, KS was dedicated 14 June 1914. It was operated by the State of Kansas and had no Catholic affiliation that I'm aware of. The property is still owned by the state and used as a prison facility.

I don't know where the records from the "San" are archived. You could try the KS State Historical Society
