The next best source for death information is the county cemetery index, usually published by the county genealogical society.

However, I would try these folks first. Send them an email and see what they can turn up. I seem to remember that they have a good obituary index, but I don't know if it is just for Independence or the entire county. This is a link to the Kansas Room at the Independence Library.
