Journal of Malissa Lillian Teter Wood, 1895-1897, Anderson County, KS
Malissa Lillian "Lissy" Teter Wood kept this daily journal from
February 1895 to June 1897,
when she lived with her husband and five
sons, between Welda and Mont Ida in Anderson
County, KS. Her husband
Richard Freeman "Freem" Wood, son of Albert Wesley Henry and
Nancy
Dunten, was born in Huntertown, Allen County, Indiana on February 24,
1840. He was
55 years old at the beginning of the journal. Malissa,
born in Morgan County, Ohio on
December 8, 1845, was the daughter of
Samuel Teter and Mary Ann Kuntz. They were married
on July 4, 1864
perhaps in Iowa. All of their sons were born while they were living in
Carroll
County, Iowa. An Anderson County Deed shows that they were
already living in Anderson
County in 1885 when Malissa Wood purchased
160 acres in Anderson County from W. F. and
Marilla B. Minchen of
Carroll County Iowa for the price of $1600. The property is described as
the southwest quarter of Section fifteen in Township twenty one North
Range nineteen.
Freeman, Malissa and George were still living in
Anderson County in 1900, but by 1909 had
moved to Lincoln Township in
Kiowa County, Kansas. They were living in Pratt County,
Kansas at the
time of their deaths: Lissy on June 4, 1918 and Freeman on November 23,
1919.
They are buried in Pleasant Plaines Cemetery in Pratt County,
Kansas. Their children were:
SAMUEL ALBERT "ALLEY" WOOD, b.
August 25, 1869, Iowa; d. March 30, 1893,
Missouri; m. MAGGIE LIGHT,
September 10, 1891. When Alley became ill, his father went to
Missouri to be with him. He was there at the time of his death and
brought his body back to
Anderson County for burial in Burch
Cemetery.

were in Meade County, KS. In 1914 Walt moved is family to DeQuincy,
Calcasieu Parish,
Louisiana.

I have
recopied this all from an old tablet an it was pretty well to pieces an
I reckon I have made
some mistakes. Can't see very well an have done
the best I could. Who ever gets it may have to
put their studying cap
on. Commenced this last week to recopy an finished to day. May eyes are
tired. Benn cold an stormy and could not do very much. Not got very much
to do now any way.
All ice an snow out doors. Will have to clean the
hen house soon as the weather gets good. I
was born in 1845, the 8 of
Dec. 70 years old last month.
February 1895
13th
Real
chily this morn. The day pretty fair in forenoon. After noon some cloudy
and snowy just a
little. Freem an I went to town with Mr. and Mrs
Crouse. Near 5 clock when we got back
14th
Some cloudy an
chily. I washed, carried in snow an wood. Carried water too an could
hardly
walk. Freeman went to Ida after the mail. I got a letter from
Rose an Mrs. Fritz in Iowa. An
Geo got one from his cousin Cora Wood
in Indiana.
15th
Chily but thawed a little this after noon.
Freem in the house. Got a bad cold. Geo went home
with Art Smith from
school this even. John an Sanford gone to Fairview to Literary this eve.
Sat. 16th
Not very cold. Killed a pig. Then John went to
Garnett. Walt come 3 clock.
Sun. 17th
Very stormy looking
this Morn. Tried to rain a n sleet just a little. Walt went home after
dinner
or rather to the place he tended. Elmer an I went out to see
Mrs. Wilson. She is sick.
18th
Very stormy looking again this
morn. Freem went to Garnett. Roads very slipery an snow all
gone only
the big drifts. Sanford some home before school was quite out with the
headache.
John went to Elmer Hentons yesterday bout____. He got back
after dark. No place sure yet.
Tues. 19th
This morn he went
to Cars to help husk shock corn. He left school last Friday. We all went
to
Literary but John and Sanford. Sanford did not go to school today.
Guess he won't go any
more. He don't want to. Walt went back after
dinner to day. John come home this eve. He
forgot to take his
mittens. Not very cold this eve a little freezing.
Fri. 22nd
Sanford an I went out to Walts place. We started early and when we got
there Walt was in the
field husking corn. Sanford went out to help
him and soon after, Mr. Furgeson an the Constable
come an several
others and served papers on Walt for $195 damage. They just done it to
scare
him to get all he had. Got him to go to Colony an then they
took all his grain an rough feed in
their Possession. Sanford and I
come home. Then Sanford went back a horseback. An after
dark Walt and
him both come back.
Sat. 23rd
Sanford went this morn to tell
Geo Herford bout their trouble. Geo was not up yet. He got up
an
started to the place. Sanford went with him. Freem and Walt went too.
They got their 1st.
They went to see Furgeson. He would not give up,
but sent teams in Walts field to husk out
Walts corn. Walt Freem and
Geo Herford came back an left Sanford there to husk corn. Then
after
dinner the three of them, Freem, Walt and Geo went to Garnett to see a
Lawyer. Then Walt
an Geo went to Colony where the Justice and Freem
come home. Walt got back 10 clock or a
bout that. We was all in bed
when he come.
Sun 24th
This morn Walt went to Herfords. Him
and Geo come back for dinner. Elmer and our Geo went
to see Roy Doll.
He is bad with Eryhyplas in his leg. The boys all home for dinner. After
dinner
Geo Herford went home.
Mon. 25th
Walt an Freem went
to Garnett this morn early. They got back at 11 clock. They went to see
a
Lawyer Bowman. After dinner Walt went back to his place. Sanford
went out there early this
morn to husk corn and see what they was a
doing. John came home from Gars Sat. noon, went
back this morn to his
work. He is helping Car husk corn. None of us from here went to
Literary.

Thurs 28
Been cloudy some mist an rainy. Just enough to make it mudy. Last
Tues. Walt an Sanford
come back. They brought 2 loads of machinery an
truck from Walts, an yesterday went back an
got another load an
brought the cattle an horses. To day Sanford an I went an brought his
house
truck. An Walt went to Garnett an Bowman has give his suit and
Walt has been beat out of a
bout 200 dol feed an damage. They scared
him to give up all his grain for damage. When there
was some mans
cattle destroyed a bout 20 acres of corn for Walt. An the old devil took
that plan
to beat Walt out of it.

Walt over to Joe Slutz to help him trim apple trees, very pleasant.

Pleasant. Little chilly this morn. Walt went back to
Slutz to help on the Orchard. John come
home fro Cars yesterday.

Chily this morn early then the sun shined warn till
about 2 clock. The wind raised in the North
an grew colder all day an
blowed very hard. John went to Elmer Fentons after dinner to work.

Real cold this morn. Ice on the Windows tho went off

man make a pond. He is not home

Very windy and chily. Elmer, I an Geo went to West Phalia to see Henry
Andrews an family.
He had moved 1 mile out of town. We found them
well. Walt was not home last night.

so chily as yesterday. Simpson an Edd called last eve to stay all night.
They
started for home this morn.

Cloudy all day
and tried to rain a little by spells. After noon Sanford plowing. Walt
at Joes
place plowing. He was home last night and we all went to
Hiatt Literary. Elmer an Geo at
school. Freem an Jim Colins went to
Garnet stayed all day.

Windy an cold. Been getting
colder all day an this after noon tried to rain. This eve trying to
snow. Freem at Jims at Garnett to day again. Freem there to witness Jim
an Collier an Kent in a
suit. Went against Colliers over $100 cost.

Cold this morn. Some ice on the windows. Did not snow
but little trying to snow now. This
morn Freem, Walt and Joe Slutz
went to H______ sale. Walt come this morn. Joe, him an
Sanford plowed
all day yesterday. Cold as it was Sanford went to Garnett to day.
Fri. 15th
Walt went back to Joes after the sale. An after a late
dinner then come home. This morning him
and Sanford halled manure to
day the boys all went to singing school this eve.
Sat 16th
Walt an Freem went a hunting this fore noon. Got nothing. After dinner
Walt went over to his
place to tend his horse. John came this eve.
Sun 17th
Boys all here for dinner. Fred Clark come this morn. He
lives in Argentine, Kans. John went
back to his place to work.
Mon. 18th
Quite pleasant. Freem and I went to Garnett. Crouse
and wife went a long. I took 9 lbs butter,
15 doz eggs, I doz hens. I
got 3 pair cuff buttons, 3 collar buttons for 90 cts. Got me a pair of
good shos for 89 cts. An groceries. Freem got him a nice suit of Clothes
for 9 dollars. We got 3
sacks of flour. Sanford sewing oats all day.
Tues 19th
Raining this morning when we got up an rained all day.
Bout noon it looked like it would stop
and Walt went home to get his
team to help plow in oats. An it soon begin to rain an he did not
come back. Between 4 an 5 clock it begin to snow an snowed hard as it
could. Was snowing an
drifting hard when we went to bed. I think full
as much fell as the big snow of this winter only it
was wet and
packed more firm.
Weds 20th
Quite big drifts this morn. The
snow was from the North last and the house on those 2 sides was
covered with snow. Looked so nice I would like to a had a picture taken.
Walt did not come
today. We looked for him all day. Elmer an Geo did
not go to school yesterday. Teacher went.
No one there all day.
Elmer an Geo went today an no scholars there but them. We washed a 3
weeks wash to day and moped. The snow went off very fast today.
Fri. 22nd
The snow will be near all gone today. Got a letter from my
Niece yesterday Kate. Bro. Harveys
girl. They live in Cae (?) She was
a little girl when I see her last. She was married Nov the 3rd

Tues. 23rd
Cool this morn. Day warm. Sanford and Elmer plowing.
Geo hearding yesterday and to day on
the 80 south. Joe Slutz come
near noon and got some oats. Geo hoed some in garden this eve
and
yesterday eve. Tis all ready for work. Freem fisting up the grape vines
and sharpening posts
yesterday and today. Baked the 1st pie plant pie
and cooked the 1st spare gr_ss this spring,
today.
Thurs 25th
Cool this morn. Hot in day. After noon Geo and I went down to the grave
yd to plant some
flower seed on Allys grave. I panted some here at
home on the south side. Freem went to Joe
Slutz sale this after noon.

Planted some
more flower seed this morn an this after noon Freem an I went to Mt.
Ida. Quite
warm and dusty and getting dry. Need rain bad.

27th
Planted corn a little while this afternoon. Walt come this eve.
Sun 28
John come this morn bout day light. He was to a dance
last eve and drove 15 miles home this
morn. He went down to see
Ballard Collins. He is very sick an has been since the 14th of
March. His horse has cut up all day and went off this eve on the run.
Frank Sumers and
Sanford went to Fairview to church this after noon
an to night went to Washing school house. A
lady talked.
Tues.
30th
Finished planting corn here at home an commenced plowing on the
south 80. Freem and
Sanford took Jims planter home this after noon. I
went over to straighten up for Walt and then
went to Mr. Collins
stayed till eve. Ballard is some better. I took Walt's old dun horse and
Sanfords cart. Yesterday afternoon gray fan had her mule colt.
May
May 1st
Took the heater down an straightened things in the
room somewhat different. Churned 2 times
and moped and a number of
other things. This eve Charley horse is sick and Sanford went to
Mout
Ida to get some medicine. Freem an Elmer halled old hay all day. Filled
up some
washouts in the field and mulched the grapes.
Thurs.
2nd
Elmer and Geo halled mire out of the barn this forenoon. This
after noon Elmer and I went to
Garnett. Elmer got him 2 hats, wool an
straw and neck tie. $1.21 for all.
Fri. the 3rd
Working on the
south 80 fixing to plant corn. This after noon Freem went to Ida. Bout 3
clock
it come up a hard rain. Wind blowed very hard and hailed some.
The boys all over to the 80 an
was out in the worse part. Freem got
far as Jim Collins an stayed till the hardest was over. Alt
Vanscoy
got here just in the worst of it. 2 cattle men was out in it all with 72
head cattle in the
timber at Kents ford. They stayed here all night.
Sat the 4th
Rained real hard last night. The ground is soaked
full now. Bout noon begin to rain easy and
rained till bout 3 clock.
Ben a cattle man stoped in here out of rain for dinner. We washed for
everything was full of water. An so many wet clothes hung them out. Did
not get dry.
Sun the 5th
Walts Birth day. John come home last
eve. He went back this eve. The boys went to Fairview
to Church.
Sanford rode coach horse. The 1st time any one was on his back. They
hitched him
up this morn, drove him down through the place. Found 7
young wolves.
Sat the 11th
This afternoon Dug come after a
load of hay. Freem and Sanford went a long to the 80 to get a
load
for us an they burnt off the 80.
Sun the 12th
Walt come bout
noon. Him and Sanford went to Jim Collins. Mr. Swartz called this morn
to
get the clock. Clock Elmer found Yesterday. Walt went back after
supper. John did not come
this week. I an Freem went down to the
Branch. I picked 1 gal gooseberries. The 1st this year.
Some
traveling Dr in Mont Ida the last two weeks. They have a concert every
night every
other night free. Milford Cunningham called this eve to
get Freem to help fix the grave yd
fense tomorrow afternoon. This
morning a light front nothing hurt here.

Geo helping me yesterday and today. The cattle in the
north pasture. Walt went home this eve
to see bout his horses. Quite
chily for a week at nights. Walt and Sanford went to Welda last

to a concert. Just when they got back home.

Cloudy all
day an seemingly cold enough to snow. Walt and Sanford commenced to
break out
some more on the south 80 this after noon just to try
starting with one team. We all went to
Welda last eve to a Dr.
concert.
Fri the 17th
Walt went home this morn to drag corn to
day and tomorrow.
Sun 19th
John come home to day. Stayed till
evening. Walt went to the concert last eve and come home
this morn.
Stayed at Joes place last eve. Henry Andrews an family come last and
Henrys
brother come last eve. Stayed till 4 clock this eve. Elmer and
I went yesterday afternoon to pick
gooseberries. We got 3 ® gal the
second picking this year. Freem went to Garnett yesterday.
Tues
21st
Quit chily this morn near frost. This week 2 light frosts wiped
the beans and the cucumber
vines. Freem and Walt went to Ida
yesterday. Got back at noon, then Walt went home to drag
his corn.
Sanford went fore noon to Lafe Walkings to get the scraper. Then in the
after noon
they fixed the north pond. Elmer dragon corn yesterday and
today. Sanford breaking on the
south 80 today. Freem making posts. I
canned 5 quts of gooseberries, from the 3 ® gal Elmer
and I picked
last Sat. Used the rest.
Weds the 22nd
Geo and I went down to
the Bennett Branch and picked gooseberries enough to can 4 quts.
Canned them today. Walt come this eve. Sanford breaking, Elmer dragging
corn.
Thurs 23rd
Walt went to Ida this fore noon to get his
breaking plow fixed. Broke on the south 80 this
afternoon. Worked in
the dam by the well. Geo and I washed. Freem helped a little 2 or 3
washes. This eve the boys all went to Welda to a Dr. concert.
Fri
the 24th Walt went over to the 80 to break and broke the plow point he
got fixed yesterday
and took it back this forenoon. This after noon
looked rainy. He went over but soon come back.
Rained hard in Mont
Ida, just a little here. Sanford working on the pond. Elmer dragging
corn.
On the way last night Walt found a chunk of meat some one had
lost on the way from town, as
supposed.
Sunday 26th
John
come last eve. We were all gone. Freem and I went to see Mr. Herford who
took with a
pain in his hip. The boys all went to Welda to the Dr
concert. Tis the lat night. There was there
2 weeks. John an I went
over in the North timber to get goosberries. We got near a flour sack
full.
Thurs the 30th
Walt went back to his place this morn. He
was here 3 days. This week he will have to replant
some of his corn.
Fri. 31st
We have had quite a good deal of rain this week. Sowed
the millet on the South 80 today.
Freem went to Ida yesterday then
went 4 miles to get 2 bu of millet seed. Took some butter to
Ida and
got me a preserve kettle. A peddler from Nebraska here to night. Took
off 39 chicks
this morn from 5 hens the last now of this spring. Only
one hen to come off yet.
June
Sat the 1st
Very warm this
week, some rain. Been quite cold an very hard wind at times this spring.
Tis
getting dry now. Rain is needed. Freem took my 3 pigs to town to
day, weighed 575 lbs at 4 cts
lb. I raised them myself from little
pigs. The boys helped some. He did not give me a cent.
That makes 55
dollars he took of my hard nocks in the last two yrs. It is alright. A
lonely road
that has no turn. A peddler from Neb stoped here last
night. He is an ol country man from
Palistine.
Sun the 2nd
Boys all home for dinner. The best part of my life is when all home.
Mon the 3rd
The old man an Sanford plowing corn. The first time
Freem has went to the field to plow corn in
a long time. Elmer is
tending Normal. Commenced today. Geo and I went to Walts this
fornoon.
Wed the 5th
Geo plowing corn the 1st day he ever
plowed all day. He plowed nearly half day yesterday.
Freem hoeing
all day. I have hold in the garden all the week so far some each day.
Put up the
last qut of tame gooseberries today. Have caned 10 gal and
1 qut tame and Wild about half of
each. Made 1 gal of tame
gooseberries preserves and 2 gal of Jell.
Thurs. 6th
Walt come
home this eve. Went back as soon as he eat supper.
Fri. the 7th
Walt an Freem went to the timber to get some pokes to put on the cattle
this after noon. Walt
went back to his place.
Sat the 8th
They all but Geo went to the South 80. They boys went to plow. Freem
went to plant some
truck and when they got over there they found a
lot of cattle in the field, so it took till 4 clock to
fix fense and
to get done plowing what corn there was.
Sun, the 9th
This is
childrens day at Welda. John and Elmer went to Fairview to Sunday school
and then
went to Welda. It looked so much like rain and did rain a
little they come back before service
commenced. Frank summers come
long an was here for supper. Walt and Dave Collins come
before
dinner. After dinner Dave went off. Walt started to Welda. Looks so much
like rain,
guess he did not go any further than his place. After
supper John an Frank Summers went to
Ida Childrens service there to
night. John as to go 12 miles to where he works to night. He
traded
Frank his bugy harness an Robe. Elmer got a letter yesterday from one of
his cousin
Oregon he never see. She is 17. Freem an Geo went to Ida
to church. Green beans for dinner
Fri an to day.
Sat 15th
No memory taken since last Sun. Yesterday Geo and I went down to old Man
________ to pick
cherries. We got 2 gal. canned 3 qut an eat the
rest. Lots of rain now. This week too wet to
plow corn most all week.
The boys plowed today. Freem took the milk to Welda. He got there
1st
this morn. He come right back then went to Garnett. Did not come back
till night. I sent
with him to get 1 Doz cans self ceilers for John.
Walt come home this morn, stayed till after
dinner. Commenced selling
the milk yesterday morn. We take 2 cans 10 gal each. Went to
Walts
weds, then Thurs. eve went to see Roy Doll. He has been laid up since
the 12th of Feb
with a very bad ankle an foot caused by a bruise.
This afternoon Geo went to Ida. Go a letter
from sister Rose. Said
her son Ozro had buried his wife. She died the 7th
Mon the 17th
Very hot. Geo and I an Mr. Crouse and wife went to Henry Daniels to pick
cherries. They got
9 gal. We got 71/2 gal. Paid 3 cts qut and picked
them all.
Sun the 23
Very hot all of last week. Some nights
cool. Geo Clark was here one night this week. I caned
3 gal of
cherries this last week. 3 gal an 3 quts in all caned. Last Thurs eve
Sanford went to
Garnett to the Teachers Contest. Elmer did not come
home that after noon. Fri after noon he
stayed for the ice cream
supper. Got home after midnight. Last eve Sanford an Walt went to Ida
to the Woodman festival an concert. To day Sanford and Elmer went to
Spring field school
house to church, drove Frank colt. John has not
come home today. Walt come at noon. Picked
the first pickles this
morn. Plenty of garden truck now. Rained a little shower. Yesterday
after
Noon a boy peddler stoped here one day this last week selling
silver ware. Got a set of
teaspoons for 60cts. He said he ad been
selling them at 2.50 but he could not make nothing.

Planted
some Cabbage seed in the turnip bed sure head an planted some Peas and
beans.
Rained a hard shower this eve. The wind blew hard for a few
minutes. Sanford plowing corn in
the last field.
Fri the 28th
Rained nearly all fore noon. This afternoon sprinkled. Freem did not get
back from the
Creamery till near noon. I commenced to clean up stairs
and took a notion to white was for we
seldom have plenty of water. An
this after noon Elmer went to Ida to get lime and white wash
brush an
it was 15 past 3 when he got back. I white washed one room and finished
cleaning but
did not get the Beadstead put up. Got them ready. The
men moved some hay yesterday to get
4th money an now tis all spoiled
for bailing. Walt an Joe Slutz bailed some yesterday. Geo
drove. I
went over there to red up for Walt and Geo come home with me. They
finished bout 6
clock. The men fixed some fense this after noon and
then went a fishing. Got nothing. Stoped
at Herfords and got tobacco
plants.
Sat the 29th
Rained hard last night and rainey this
fore noon and some this afternoon.
Sun the 30th
John come
home yesterday afternoon. To day looks rainy. So wet cant plow corn and
he quite
where he was to work. All boys home for dinner.

Walt an John went to Elmer Fentons. John went to
settle up with Elmer for his work. They
come through Garnett an John

Commenced stacking oats.
Weds the 10th
Freem went this morn to see a man that has charge
of cattle South of the 80 a bout 100 head in
our field all night.
Took them all day to settle. Sanford and Elmer over there all day
watching
cattle. Geo planted some taters in the tater patch cross the
branch. A Nursery man called to day.
I got order of $5.50. Baking
powder agent called an left 1 lb can on trial. Walt and Clem

come yesterday after noon and was not able to get their dinner. An Geo

all was done all day. They ate and went a way. John is
over there yet. Rainy nearly all day.

Last Mon was a very hot day. 104 in the shade. No

afternoon Geo and I went to Walts. Last Monday, I traded

to bed this even, the cattle got to bothering and they got up. Joe Sultz
bull got in the yard. Roastin ears for dinner the second mess this year.

not get done supper till dark. We

It has blowed hard nearly all day,

been home all
week with a very bad boil on his hand. He went home to see if he could

One week ago
very warm no rain for quite a while. Ponds are drying up. Roads are
quite dusty.
Week a go to day we went to Garnett. Mrs. Swartz was to
come an went a long. She failed to
come, but went in the morn. Last
mon Freem went in with a sample of flax. Tues, Weds and
Thurs he
halled 2 loads each day and yesterday 1 load. Was gone all day. He gets
72 cts a bu.
Last Tues after noon I went to see Mrs. Daniels and
Bertha. She come back from Illinois on a
visit. 4 of us went to Ida
to Dundard Church. Last eve Elmer went to Dolls school house to
singing school. Elmer and Sanford went this afternoon to Mr. Daniels to
get some winter
apples. They got 4 bu 25 cts a bu picked. Freem went
to Ida this afternoon. Sanford went to

since the 26th. Have forgotten some things. John come home from Smileys
where he has been husking corn. This is the 3rd week. Walt come too from

to take
her to Dundard feet washing. We all went but Walt. He went

house was more than full. John has

very disagreeable week. Gues the election the cause for a general set of

George worked like a slave and milked 9 cows a lone. Freem
and Elmer
did not get back till dark. We got the clothes dried what we washed Weds

not hang them all out Weds. It looked too rainy. Dot Doll
was married to Alva Alexander
yesterday. Any truth in sayings not

and family come last eve and we all went to Literary with them, but

Elmer. Elmer has sore neck. Not very many out. Had a very
fair program, but no Debaten.
Was warm, but mudy. Commenced raining
some time in the night an had rained hard all day or
nearly so. Would
slack a little an then commence again. Not very cold. Tis 10 clock pm an
snowing hard. The ground is covered. All the snow the other day had
nearly all gone off.
Sanford and Geo washed the porch from top to
bottom to day. They are all in bed quite a while a
go. I have just
got my work done so I shall go too, Elmer churned after supper. I moped
and
emptied the jars that was full of rain water. Lots of water in
the cellar. Every thing a flood out
doors. John got him a new watch.
I think it was a week a go to day. Harry Dunden of Mont
Ida and an
old man was both buried last week.

not get to have the Xmas tree at Fairview last eve as was intended. John

till dark. Their was a funeral in Welda an the mill was closed an he

Bad weather for near a week. Had vacation
in our school this week. Elmer has been laid up near
a week with a
swelling on his neck. Him and Sanford went to the timber to day to get a

cloudy, near all last week lost. Wed noon Mr. Simpson an Lillie an son
John an Mrs
Simpson stoped on their way moving to Lynn Co. Their
teams were tired. They put up for the
night. Thurs morn, it was
snowing and very disagreeable and they stayed till Fri morn. It was
more pleasant tho cloudy. Sat morn was quite cold. Turned cold Fri night
after the boys come
from Church. To day is quite chily tho not so
cold. Clear most of this after noon. John come
yesterday and went
back to day. Walt Cris Young and Grant Herald was here for dinner. This
after noon Geo and I went to Herfords. Sanford went to Ida to church
this eve.
Mon the 27th
Pleasant. We all went to Literary this
eve. Mock trial was all was done. It was near 11 when
we got home.

Tues. the 28th
Peter Watkins died this morn. He has
been sick with dropsy over 3 yrs. Simpsons boys come
this eve to get
the load they left here last week. Pleasant all day.
Weds the
29th
Freem and I went to Watkins funeral. A large procession 26 teams
and a lot at the grave yd.
Buried at Burch. Sanford helped dig the
grave.
Thurs the 30th
Rainy this morn, but soon stoped.
Sanford an I washed. Freem went to Welda. Stayed near all
day. John
come bout 1 clock. Roads to bad to travel. He come Tues eve an went back
yesterday morn early. He come to day to bring Bess mare back. Tis now
bed time and raining
again. Clothes on the line. Not very cold.

Sanford went to Jim Collins to husk corn. John went back
to the Smith place early this morn.
Freem in Ida nearly all day.
Looks stormy an did mist this eve. Wind in North. Mon 27

Freem went to Garnett. Went horseback. Roads very bad. Sanford and Elmer
went to Timber to
saw wood.

I went to visit
Mrs. Dick Fenton. John come near noon. Sanford went back with him. They
started 3 clock. George went to his cousins, John E. Wood.

I quilted near all day. Mollie an the girls come this after noon
an stayed for Literary. John E. an
Walt went to Garnett. Walt went to
sign papers for the rent to the Row place.
Tues 4th
Freem went
to Garnett. He halled my fat sow to town. I did not get a cent of it.
She brought 9
dol. I had a head ache all day. Could not do a lick of
work. Freem stayed till the children come
from school. I had to keep
up the fire and my head nearly busted. Sanford come this eve from
where he went Sunday.
Weds 5th
Freem went to Ida. Walt and
Elmer went a way last even did not get back till near 12 clock.
Thurs 6th
Cold south wind. I went to Walts this after noon to help
rid up a little.
Fri 7th
Turned colder last night an snowed
some. This morn snowed a little more and quit. Chily. The
boys all
gone to Literary at Fairview. John come last eve. He come to help on the
cistern.
Freem and Sanford commenced it yesterday. Revival meetings
all round us. I have not went

Sat the 8th
Freem
went to Ida. John and Sanford worked in the cistern till 4 clock then
could go no farther
till they blast. Not cold but lots of cloudy
weather.

Boys all a way but Walt. John went back
to his place this morn. Elmer went a long to get the
single harness
Sanford traded for with John. Geo went to Wash Lewises with John Clark.
They went to see a New York boy. Afternoon John Wood and family
came.
Mon. 10th
Freem went to church and to the baptizing.
Three members in the Dundard church then he
went to Studebakers to
get a drill to work the cistern. Walt and John went to Smiths to get a
load of feed and stuck in the mud and up set and did not get but one
load home and took all day
to do that.
Tues 11th
Broke the
drill and Freem had to go to Ida to get it fixed. Mrs. Fenton and Mrs.
Swartz come
to visit to day. I am all alone to night. Freem and
Sanford went to a debate on the silver
question an Elmer an Geo went
to Hiatt to arithmetic match.
Wed. 12th
Cloudy this forenoon.
Rainy this after noon. Sanford went to Ida to get the drill fixed this

noon. I sent a letter to Rose and Sarah.
Thurs 13th
Very vine day. I washed nearly all a lone. Freem an Sanford working in
the cistern till 3 clock.
Then Freem went to Ida to get the pick
fixed.

More pleasant. Only some wind this after noon.

We all went to Literary lst even but Walt. He
did not. Walt, Mollie Wood an I went to Garnett

turkeys 71/2 to 9 cts a lb. I took in 5 late ones, 8cts lb brought 2.56
dressed 4
hens 1.12 at 7 cts lb. Took in 19 doz eggs.

John has been home all the week to help in the cistern. This

Smith place. I went to see Mrs.
Smith. She has been very sick. Is better now. Quite chily this

Freem walked to Ida this fore noon to get some more blastings fixings.

Sun 1st
Cold. Turned cold yesterday after noon. Chily to day. Mr. Colburn come
yesterday to Cement
the cistern. It was misty in the morn, but soon
cleared off. He come bout 9 clock. Commenced
at 10. They could not
mix fast enough an carry the cement. He had to wait for mortar and then
got done before 4 clock. Freem went to Ida with him. John come home to
day. Went back this
eve. He has bad cold. Elmer an Geo went to their
cousin, John Wood.

Very cloudy yesterday an all day
to day. Snowed quite hard for a while. This morn the ground
is
covered. Moderated this morn. This eve freezing. No literary last eve.
The boys went, soon
come back. Freem an Sanford hitched up Flora colt
and drove her to Garnett. The 1st time she
was hitched to a wagon.
They had her hitched to a cart once. Walt and Grant halled away their
hay they had here yesterday. Took 3 loads.

Sanford went to Garnett to day. Mollie an the girls come near noon.

Geo and I went to Garnett to day. We went to see Mrs.
Doll. Toll in 27 doz an 9 eggs. Sold for
6 cts doz. After we started
Freem and Walt, Grant, and John E. come. Walt got Grant a suit of
clothes and him and John E. got riding Cultivators. John M. come
yesterday an took a load of
hay back an then come back and stayed all
night an till after diner today. Sanford an Grant went
to Washington
to church to day and to night him and Elmer when to Ida to church.

I went to help Molly Wood white wash. Freem an Sanford
went to Garnett to take milett. Got
22 cts bu. Sold 11 dol and 25 cts
worth. This has been a very disagreeable month. Windy,
snowy an
rainy. The last two days has been very windy. Several little calves this
month and 36
chickens. Walt lost his cow this morn.
Fri 27th
School out today. Elmer and Geo did not miss a day this term. Elmer
missed half day yesterday
all he missed. Freem and I went to school
this after noon. Quite a few visitors and a pleasant
time.

Freem and Geo went to Garnett this after noon. Geo got new pair
of shoes. Freem got a rose
bush to sent in between the 2 south
windows. Called 7 sisters. Got a snow ball bust to sent o

grave. Got a letter from Rose. She had been very sick with lung fever
and grip.

John did not come home today nor Walt.

year this morn Alley died. Geo an I went to set out bushes on his grave

day. Very windy tho clear. Sanford plowing on the south

Ida this eve.
Elmer and Geo went. John come this morn before 9
clock. He come after hay. Went right back.

Very stormy
looking this morn. Geo and I went to West Phalia to see Henrys. It
rained soon
after we got there an we stayed all night. It drizzled

We come home half past 10.

Mollie and the girls an Mrs. Readshaw
here to visit. Milford C an a broom man an a stove
polish man come.
While I was getting supper the last one named stayed all night. I got
one
broom for 3 doz eggs from the broom man. Milford come to announce
the death of Mrs. Slotz.

It rained all night
last night an most all fore noon to day. This after noon Freem an I went
to
Mrs. Slotz funeral. She lived 100 miles away. They brought her
home and buried her at Birch.
She is Daniels daughter.

Boys all home for dinner. John went to Walt's this eve. Got
Charley Zeber and went home. It
was dark when he started.

17 years today since my father died.
Weds 15
John come
this morn. He started at 5 clock this morn. It was near dark last night
when he got
done planting then took the planter and got his breakbar
and started at 5. He come to bring
Walts team an to help Walt put in
his flax. The wind has blowed hard all week. Geo and I
commenced to
make garden. Nearly every body done an early garden up. Ours wasn't
ready the
fense tore down an hogs running out. I did not care to ____
for pigs. Planted the early fortune
taters. Just threw them in the
ground an covered them up.

We planted corn part of 2
days this last week for the first and Sanford planted part of 3 days for
Burns. Broke a casting Fri. eve and went to Garnett yesterday. Yesterday
morn it rained. He
did not get back till after dinner then he
finished at Burns. John come this morn. Got pasture for
his cattle.
Started back this eve. Took his cow an 3 horses. Wind has blowed every
day this lst
week hard. Nice to day. This eve wind blowing hard. Walt
did not come to day. D. Fenton

Tues. 21st
Quite chily last eve an this eve. Sowed some egg plant
seed and made some garden an planted
some flower seed. Walt come
yesterday morn to get the planter to commence planting on the

he lives. Mollie come last eve to get the Boiler to make soap. They
killed a pig an it
spoiled in less than a week. They will make it in
soap. Geo and I made some more garden. This
after noon sowed the
yellow onion seed. Got of mills seed co. and planted some snips an the
beans and peas. Freem went to Garnett this after noon. Drove Charles to
the old spring wagon.

Elmer plowing in the north
field. Sanford dragging on the south 80 this fore noon. Terrible
black cloud in the north very hard wind for a short time. Rained some
this fore noon. John
come this eve. Went right back.
Thurs
23rd
Commenced planting corn on the south 80 this fore noon. Looks
very much like rain all the fore
noon. The Oyster medicine man stayed
here last night. Left 1 bottle cough syrup, one of pain
cure, one of
cinnamon essence. Paid him 50 cts an 2 of the bottles he left here last
year. Kept
him all night. He allowed 1.00 for than and now we owe him
75 cts. The wind blew so hard last
night shook the house.

29th
Yesterday wind blowed very hard all day. Tried to rain this
morn. During the day grew quite
chily. Sanford and Elmer plowing this
after noon. Fixing fense this fore noon. Been too wet all
week to
plow. Last Fri night and Sat night rained very hard. The crick too high
to cross in
safety last Sunday. John come St. and stayed till mon.
Walt come Sunday after noon and stayed
supper. This after noon Geo an
I went to Ida. Sanford went to Drundard church last even and to
night
him and Elmer went. Last Fri 8 little ducks hatched. My head ached an I
could not tend
them. 4 got out of next. The hen picked them to death.

2 cattle men stayed here last night.

Patterson come
just before dinner. He is the man that has the cattle in the pasture
south of us.
Him and Freem went to Ida this after noon. Old man
Tracy called yesterday after noon. Stayed
till after supper. He come
a foot. He is 75 years old. He lives in Ida. Freem, Sanford and Elmer
went to church an took him back to Ida.

Walt is 24 years to day. This
morn Freem went to Garnett. Got back at noon. Went to get a
piece for
the planter that Sanford went to Garnett last Sat eve to get and they
had to send for it.

called this morn to get Sanford to plant corn.
They did not get the
check roer with the planter. They borrowed an then they did not need
him.

work this afternoon an are drilling in the corn.

The wind blowing hard. I went to John E. Wood to get
some turkey eggs. No one at home.

Finished planting corn in North field.
Been nearly all week at it. The planter bothered. Got a

John come this morn. He traded his Charley

I sent a letter to Emma Lib an Sarah. Freem, Sanford an Elmer went to
Garnett to hear Brother
Botkins make a speech. Did not get back till
nearly dark.

Planted the bottom below the cow yd.
Very dry and hard. Planted it to corn an pumpkin see

east side of the garden and two rows of parsnip over where I had sowed

this spring. St out shuck tomatoes. The clouds gathered up

most hail fell since we are here as
far as I remember. And the largest. The ground was white.

Looks very rainy. Geo an I took Gray Fan an went to
Johns after Freem come back from Welda.
It rained on us slowly quite
a ways and rained hard. After dinner we started back at 4 clock, 9
miles to drive. Windy. Clear part of the day.

and I washed the boys finished plowing for milett.

Rained nearly all day an hard part of the day. Tis now 9 clock and
raining hard and cool the last

Windy.
Freem, Sanford and I went to Fairview to church an the preacher failed
to come. Just
had Sunday School. John E. an family was here for
dinner.
Mon 18th
Cloudy. To rainy looking to got to church is
eve.
Tues 19th
Sanford to John M. to get the mare. He traded
John his bugy for it. It rained and he did not get
back till evening.
They both went to Garnett first.
Weds 20th
Elmer went to Johns
to get him to help bail hay. They got back two clock and then they went
to
bailing soon after dinner.
Thurs 21st
Rainy this morn.
Did not rain till 4 clock an tis now 10 an has rained real hard ever
since. They
just got done. Bailing an loaded one wagon to go to Welda
an had to put the rest in Barn. The
boys all here tonight. They all
went to a medicine concert at Welda last night but John. Walt
stoped
at his place. Come over this morn. They boys did not get back till 12
clock. Tis raining

Fri 22nd
Well we had a terrible rain. Many
fields washed out bad. Our taters on the south 80 terribly
washed. 13
of the little chicks John brought from the Smith place all drowned. The
water run in
the barrel. All floating on top of the water. Two got in
other coop. One under a board.
Couldn't kick when I found it. One of
the others died. Walt and John helped John E. fix fense
all day round
pastures.
Sat 23rd
John went over to his place this morn. It
rained 3 hours this morn. Did not start to the Creamery
till 9 clock.
Then John started to his place. He forded the crick this morn come back
this after
noon an the crick too high an he had to go clear back with
in 2 miles of his place an cross the
bridge. 9 clock when he come.
Freem went to Ida this after noon. He got back a few minutes
before
John did. Sanford an Elmer covered the taters that washed out. Today we
heard of many
Cyclones in the last few days.

Mon
June 1st
Been rainy the last two weeks. Too wet to work in field or
garden, tho the boys plowing corn an
dragging in millet. Yesterday
John come. Went back this morn. Freem an I went to hear young
Studabaker preach yesterday in Ida. When we come home John was ready to
go to the Rumby
Ford to see several Baptized. I eat a lunch an went
with him. The road terrible in places. Many
corn fields nearly washed
out. Sanford an Elmer went to Washington school house this morn.
From there to the Baptising. They got no dinner till come home. Sanford
was Baptised.
Tues 2 of J.
Elmer got a new suit last week. I
went to Dick Fentons twice this last week to get mulberries.
Mollie
and Geo went with me one day. The next time I went _____ _____ took
Frank an the
cart. Canned 3 gal. mixed with 1 gal of goose berries.
Caned 5 qts of time goos berries. Not
many on this year. Walt did not
come home yesterday. Turned chily yesterday an has been ever
since.
Cold enough last night an tonight for fire.
Mon the 8th
Rained
a good shower yesterday after noon. Molly come yesterday. Her an I went
to the grave
yd. The rain was so close we did not get out. Looked as
if it might be a tornado only a hard
shower. Mr. and Mrs. Vanscay
stoped in till the rain was over. John walked home yesterday an
Sanford took him back. Got in a shower both ways. Walt come last eve
stayed till after
supper. Elmer started to Normal at Garnett this
noon.
Tues 9th
A cool day. Nice to work out doors. I been
hoeing all day or nearly so. Sowed some clover
seed by the walk.
Planted the last cabbage seed in the bottom an some beans that washed
out.
Just had to plant over. John come this eve to get Walt to help
him plow corn. His corn is getting
to beg to plow. Walt could not
help. He has to work his own corn. John Sanford, Elmer an Geo

went to Watkins. (?)
Sat 13th
Freem, Geo and myself went to
Garnett. George an I got back at noon. Freem stayed for
Convention.
Did not get home till dark. I took in one doz frys (young chickens) one
doz hens,
11 doz eggs. $5.14. All bought. I got me black cashmere
shawl.
Sun the 14th
Warm now. A few nights a go nearly cold
enough to front. Dry now. The ground hard to
cultivate. It was so wet
an got dry so quick, the ground cracked open. Crops need rain. Yebry
an Irene an family come. Bell has not been here since last summer. Guess
it is over a year since
last summer. Henry went back this eve. Her an
children stayed all night.

Bell and I went to visit
Alleys grave this forenoon. This after noon they went home. We went to
Ida last eve. It was Childrens day. Some one stole the quilt I took
along in the wagon. Been
very warm today. Walt come this morn. He was
not home yesterday. He went right back. John
come yesterday. Stayed
till this morn.

Warm all week. Tried to rain
yesterday tho not very much. Freem Walt an John an myself went
to
Henrys. They will not start to Sherrid Co this coming week as they
intended to. Geo and I
went to Ida yesterday afternoon. I went to get
sister Lib a dress to send by Henrys.

Years Day 1897
Very pleasant. Warm enough to have the doors open when
getting dinner yesterday. Was rainy

Last eve it clouded over an bout 9 clock begin to drizzle

day today. Walt come late
last eve to get the boys to help him bail to day. To stormy to do any

The ground covered with snow an ice. The boys went
to Walts in sley
then come back. Mr. Readshaw come with them 4 clock. Walt come took the
sleigh an took him back. Tis cold now. Ice on the windows an the wind
blowing hard. So
stormy Sanford did not come home to day. He is
working 9 miles north of here. The boys all
home Christmas dinner.
John is employed by the Medicine co yet. He has been home pretty
often of late. Tis so snowy now he wont start out till better weather.

from Texas
an he is moving to Adel, Iowa. He has been there several
days. I think since last Sat with 2
wagons an 5 horses. Walt bought

The men
folks all went to Welda to church last eve. It rained very hard. Did not

lightened. They stayed at the church till it quit
