COUNTY FORMATION

Although Butler County was an original Kansas county created August 30, 1855, it was not officially organized until Feb. 11, 1859. The county was named in honor of Andrew Butler, a U.S. Senator from South Carolina, who coauthored the Kansas–Nebraska Act. The boundaries underwent many changes through the years.

El Dorado is the county seat.
